New Look Stanners get past St. Francis Again

It was St. Francis Prep that inspired Molloy coach Tom Catalanotto to experiment in the first place.

He sent struggling Mount St. Mary’s-bound guard Kelly Guerriero to the bench and inserted hard-nosed Kathryn Edwards, feeling it was the best way to match an opponent without a true post player. The changes have since sparked a string of good play from the Stanners as their defense, speed and ball movement has improved.

“It gets the game going,” Binghamton-bound forward Kyra Aloizos said. “It gets everyone moving. It’s better for our team just because it get everyone involved.”

The effects were again on display against the Terriers. No. 4 Molloy turned up its half-court defense and got out in transition in the third quarter to pull away for a 50-34 win over host No. 5 St. Francis Prep in the CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Division I girls basketball quarterfinals Tuesday night. They advance to face top-seeded Christ the King 6 p.m. Thursday at Bishop Ford in the semifinals.

“It really gets to them,” freshman guard Amani Tatum said of her team’s quickness. “When we get into them, they get frustrated. You hear them yelling on the court.”

Kyra Aloizos scored the game’s first 10 points and finished with 16 for Molloy (11-14). Tatum added 10

Rouse, Molloy shock Christ the King

Senior guard scores 34 points in Stanners stunner
By DYLAN BUTLER

Ernest Rouse exploded for 34 points, including the game-winning layup with 15 seconds left in the fourth quarter, to lead Archbishop Molloy to a stunning upset of Christ the King, No. 2 in The Post's New York City boys basketball rankings, 60-59, in front of a packed house at Jack Curran Gymnasium in Briarwood, Queens Friday night.

He was 11-of-25 from the field, including 6-of-11 from 3-point range, and 6-of-6 from the foul line. The senior guard buried a 3-pointer with 1:20 left in the fourth quarter to give the Stanners (5-4, 2-0 AA-Brooklyn/Queens) a 58-57 lead, but Maurice Barrow, who led the Royals with 18 points, tied the game from the foul line with 1:05 remaining

After Rouse missed a 3-point attempt, T.J. Curry went 1-of-2 from the line to put Christ the King (6-2, 1-1) in front, 59-58, with 46 seconds left.

Archbishop Molloy wears out St. Francis Prep in CHSAA championship

Dylan Kitts writes:

The teams played 80 scoreless minutes, and it seemed as if these Queens rivals could not have been more evenly matched. Finally, five minutes into the first overtime period, Glenn Whelan scored on a header and helped Molloy break the stalemate.

The Stanners tacked on another goal in the second overtime period and walked away with a 2-0 victory and their second consecutive CHSAA Intersectional title.

Archbishop Molloy tops St. Mary's, will defend title

Lauren Spota thought the play was over.

Senior midfielder Kathryn Edwards fired a ball into the box that deflected off a St. Mary’s defender and went right to freshman Victoria Antonino streaking toward the goal on the near side. Spota, the Archbishop Molloy girls soccer coach, didn’t think her striker was going to be able to score as Mary Martinosky, the Gaels’ goalkeeper, read the play well.

“The goalie had so much of the post,” Spota said. “Then somehow she squeezed it in between the goalie and the post. “

Antonino gave the Stanners the game’s first goal and a lead they would not relinquish in the 21st minute. Molloy, the defending champion, survived St. Mary’s hitting the cross bar and added a late goal from Kyra Meli for a 2-0 win in the CHSAA Nassau/Suffolk girls soccer semifinals Wednesday in Manhasset. The game was moved from Alley Pond Park because of heavy rain.

“I knew I was going to have to slide for it because it was going to keep skipping and it would have gotten past me,” Antonino said. “I just hoped for the best and it went in.”

That is exactly what Molloy (6-6-4) did all last week with Meli. The team’s leading scorer suffered a mild concussion in a 4-0 win over Mary Louis last Wednesday. The junior striker, who missed just the team’s regular-season finale, was pushed from behind and hit her own player in front of her and the gro

Stanners Beat TMLA, Advance to BQ Diocesan Playoffs

The Stanner Varsity Volleyball team beat out The Mary Louis Academy, allowing the team to advance to the CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Diocesan playoffs. In "Hilltoppers trying to climb out of late-season funk", Marc Raimondi of The New York Post writes:

Mary Louis stumbled to the finish in CHSAA Queens last week. The Hilltoppers had already secured second place, but fell to Archbishop Molloy, a team it already beaten, on Wednesday.

In "Archbishop Molloy punches Diocesan playoff ticket with win over Mary Louis" Ebenezer Samuel of The NY Daily News writes:

Molloy seemed to control the second set, slowly building a 17-10 lead behind several strong kills from Mulvhill. When Mary Louis closed to 24-23, Perez was there to slam the door with a kill. The Stanners would fall behind in third set, only to rally behind a flurry of aces from Perez, who also closed that game with a kill. The powerfully built senior ended the fourth game with a block.

Stanners, Terriers tie 2-2

Last Updated: 2:25 PM, September 18, 2009

Few coaches are happy about losing a two-goal lead, especially in the second half. But St. Francis Prep boys soccer coach Franco Purificato was thrilled with a 2-2 draw against Archbishop Molloy Thursday afternoon at Alley Pond Park.

“It was a really even game and I’m very happy because we stayed with them the whole game,” Purificato said, referring to the defending CHSAA Class A intersectional champions. “Both teams played awesome. There are a lot of positives I can draw from it.”

After a scoreless first half, Daniel Begonja scored a pair of goals in a three-minute span early in the second half and St. Francis Prep (1-0-1 Brooklyn/Queens) had stunned the Stanners.

But Molloy (1-0-1 Brooklyn/Queens), the No. 1 team in The Post New York City soccer rankings roared back. Greg Davis scored his second goal of the year and then sent a perfect cross to the back post where Glenn Whelan headed in the equalizer midway through the second half.

Xaverian 4, Holy Cross 1: Julian Morelli, Mike Pappalardi, Mike Marando and Xavier Jimenez scored for Xaverian (1-1-0 Brooklyn/Queens) at Verrazano Narrows Complex in Brooklyn Thursday. Holy Cross dropped to 0-2-0.

Archbishop Molloy survives Xaverian scare to remain No. 1 in the city

Last Updated: 3:20 AM, September 16, 2009

The CHSAA soccer season kicked off in earnest on Tuesday and after just six matches it appears this will likely be a wild season. Defending Class A intersectional champion Archbishop Molloy survived a scare on opening day and No. 3 Fordham Prep needed a last-minute goal to tie Archbishop Stepinac. St. Francis Prep has gotten off on the right foot, beating rival Holy Cross and St. Peter’s proved its not ready to hand off Staten Island supremacy just yet.

1. Archbishop Molloy (1-0-0) (Last week: 1)

Led by the offensive threats of Greg Davis, Glenn Whelan and Rocco Romeo to name a few, the Stanners are the team to beat, the favorite to repeat as Class A champions. But it won’t come easy. Lesson No. 1 for our No. 1 came Tuesday afternoon with a hard-fought, 1-0 victory against No. 5 Xaverian.

Next: @ No. 4 St. Francis Prep (Sept. 17, 4 p.m.)

2. Regis (1-0-0) (3)

If the Raiders hope to get back to the Class A semifinals and beyond this year, they’re going to need Will Eberts to score and Connor Hailey to keep the ball out of the net. That was the case in their le
