New Look Stanners get past St. Francis Again

By JOSEPH STASZEWSKI

It was St. Francis Prep that inspired Molloy coach Tom Catalanotto to experiment in the first place.

He sent struggling Mount St. Mary’s-bound guard Kelly Guerriero to the bench and inserted hard-nosed Kathryn Edwards, feeling it was the best way to match an opponent without a true post player. The changes have since sparked a string of good play from the Stanners as their defense, speed and ball movement has improved.

“It gets the game going,” Binghamton-bound forward Kyra Aloizos said. “It gets everyone moving. It’s better for our team just because it get everyone involved.”

The effects were again on display against the Terriers. No. 4 Molloy turned up its half-court defense and got out in transition in the third quarter to pull away for a 50-34 win over host No. 5 St. Francis Prep in the CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Division I girls basketball quarterfinals Tuesday night. They advance to face top-seeded Christ the King 6 p.m. Thursday at Bishop Ford in the semifinals.

“It really gets to them,” freshman guard Amani Tatum said of her team’s quickness. “When we get into them, they get frustrated. You hear them yelling on the court.”

Kyra Aloizos scored the game’s first 10 points and finished with 16 for Molloy (11-14). Tatum added 10

Stanners late-game woes continue in Ford loss

The situation has become all too familiar to Archbishop Molloy.

It again appeared to be building momentum, but went away from what was working and couldn’t sustain it. The Stanners found themselves right in the thick of things in the final minutes of a league game, down just five, but again were the team making critical errors down the stretch.

“We turned it over right after that or we took a long shot and they got a rebound and went down the other end for a layup,” Molloy coach Tom Catalanotto said. “That’s usually what happens to us. … We can’t finish. It’s getting very frustrating.”

Molloy left Park Slope with a 56-47 loss to Bishop Ford in CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Division I girls basketball Monday night. Playing without Adelphi-bound point guard Marielle Duryea, who was home sick with a fever, the Stanners rode forward Kyra Aloizos in the third quarter to get back into the game, with Kelly Guerriero (nine points) and the rest of the Molloy guards struggling from the outside. Elizabeth (Gurt) Lynch also added nine.

“I was just drawing the fouls,” Aloizos said. “If I got the rebound I was just putting it up. I just wanted to get the foul.”

The Binghamton-bound senior scored 15 points, including 11 str

Molloy's Aloizos breaks funk in loss to Mary Louis

Amidst Karin Robinson’s stellar performance, Kyra Aloizos was having a resurgence of her own. The Archbishop Molloy forward, after a fast start to the season, has battled inconsistency in her focus and her play for the better part of January.

Aloizos was in old form and as active on the offensive glass as she has been at any point in the season at Pitaro Gymnasium, one of her favorite places to play. The Binghamton-bound senior scored 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in Molloy’s 68-59 loss to host Mary Louis in CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Division I girls basketball Saturday. She made deliberate post moves and drove strong to the basket.

“Half of my points tonight were off rebounds,” said Aloizos, who admitted to being in a prolonged funk. “Crashing the boards gets me more active and more in the flow of the game.”

Unfortunately for the Stanners, Robinson burned them for 20 of her 30 points in the second half and grabbed 20 rebounds. Molloy (7-11, 4-5 B/Q) trimmed a 12-point third quarter deficit to just 56-51 on a baseline drive from Aloizos with 5:05 left in the game. Robinson then grabbed the game’s next five rebounds and scored six straight points to put TMLA (11-5, 7-2) back up 63-51 with 4:24 remaining.

“We didn’t rebound down the stretch,” Molloy coach Tom Catalanotto said. “That was our problem”

Added Aloizos of Robinson: “She went off. She went

Tatum, Archbishop Molloy tame Terriers late

Amani Tatum proved once again that she is just a freshman in name only.

The Archbishop Molloy guard put together a sequence of plays down the stretch worthy of a seasoned veteran to help end the team’s five-game losing streak. Tatum scored five straight points and grabbed a key rebound in the game’s final 1:30 to allow the Stanners to slip past St. Francis Prep, 56-52, in CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Division I girls basketball at Jack Curran Gymnasium Tuesday night.

“Nobody on this team considers her a freshman,” senior guard Kelly Guerriero said. “The way she plays, the way she acts, she is not a freshman.”

Molloy got the ball back off the rebound of a missed free throw by Kyra Aloizos, who was trying to tie the score by completing a 3-point play. Tatum proceeded to easily break down her defender for a 3-point play of her own. On the Terriers' next possession, she poked the ball away from the Nicole Lenard near the top of the key and went in for an easy layup to put the Stanners up 52-48 with 48.9 seconds left. Turnovers kept SFP from making a comeback and Tatum rebounded her own missed free throw with 40 seconds remaining.
