Molloy beats Christ the King

Archbishop Molloy was putting together quite a fourth quarter performance in front of an overflowing capacity crowd at the Jack Curran Gymnasium on Friday night.

Seven-foot center Moses Brown took it one step further by getting the fans to jump out of their seats with a rip-roaring two-handed slam dunk that was just part of a fourth quarter rally that helped Molloy earn a 78-67 CHSAA Class AA boys basketball victory over division rivals Christ the King.

Molloy back on track against Holmdel

Its been a tough stretch for Archbishop Molloy (13-6) through the latter half of January with defeats to Christ the King and Sachem East that might have made it tough to get up for a long road trip down the shore to New Jersey.

The lack of confidence and lack of energy gae the Stanners a tough road through the first half on Sunday against the host, Holmdel, in the Coaches Choice USA Shore vs. NY/NJ Challenge, but junior guard Jenna Mastellone forged ahead as Molloy wore down the Hornets in a 63-39 victory.

Rodrigues OT goal powers Molloy to CHSAA title

Jesse Rodrigues didn’t take a peek at the Belson Stadium scoreboard to see how little time was remaining on the clock. His mission was to put the ball into the net.

Rodrigues stormed down the right side and unleashed a curling shot into the bottom right corner of the net with only 15.6 seconds remaining to lift Archbishop Molloy to a thrilling 1-0 double overtime victory in the CHSAA Class AA Intersectional boys soccer championship Saturday night at Belson Stadium.

Molloy Snaps Fordham Prep unbeaten streak

Archbishop Molloy had designs on avenging last year’s CHSAA Class AA title defeat when they traveled on Columbus Day to take on defending champions Fordham Prep.

But the Stanners game plan wasn’t coming to fruition as they stared at a one-goal deficit on the scoreboard at halftime. The final 40 minutes proved however that Molloy made the necessary adjustments.

Molloy stormed out in the second half with goals from Jesse Rodrigues and gained the eventual winner in the 68th minute by Tim Deliyannis to earn a 2-1 victory over Fordham Prep at Murphy Field in the Bronx.

Coaches

Mike McCleary
Basketball

Coach Michael McCleary began at St. Anthony’s High School on Long Island in 1986-87, followed by work at his alma mater — Queens College as Assistant Coach from 1987-1991. Mike moved from Queens College to SUNY Farmingdale in 1991-1995 where he served as an Assistant Coach and then Head Coach. During his career he has had teams ranked in the top 25 of the NJCAA with a career record of 69-27. He served as Assistant at Fairfield University from 1995-1998. His two post season appearances were in 1996 at the NIT and in 1997 at the NCAA.

In 1998 Coach McCleary came to Molloy as a teacher and Athletic Director. He serves as the Varsity Basketball coach. One of his greatest challenges and accomplishments was overseeing the development of a woman’s athletics program which increased the number of sports from 9-16 and the number of teams from 16-33. These teams have proven to be formidable competitors. The two key factors that made Molloy an attractive opportunity for coach were our dedication to academics and commitment to the development of a strong athletic program.
